The severity of the storms prompted unprecedented action, as federal employees in Washington, D.C., including those working at the White House and the Pentagon, were instructed to leave work early to ensure their safety in the face of the adverse weather conditions.
Meteorological authorities have classified the current storm system as a rare ‘Level 4’ risk for severe storms across the Washington, D.C. region, the first time such a classification has been issued in over a decade.
The primary threats throughout Monday have been tornadoes and destructive winds, leading to the issuance of severe thunderstorm and tornado watches across several states, including Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Despite the havoc and tragedy caused by the recent storms, relief is in sight as meteorologists predict the severe weather to dissipate by Tuesday morning. The series of storms, spanning from Colorado to Virginia, have left a trail of destruction, with more than 300 damaging storm reports and a total of ten reported tornadoes across various states, according to the National Weather Service.
